Biography

Professor Michelle Gu publishes prolifically in linguistics. Her research spans language and identity, multilingualism and mobility, family language policy, and social media. She theorised "Digital Trans-literacies," has recently done a series of research to examine user–platform interactions through linguistic ethnography and computational modelling. As PI, she has secured multiple grants including Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme (HSSPFS) and General Research Fund (GRF) of the Research Grants Council, Public Policy Research Funding Scheme (PPR), and Standing Committee on Language Education and Research — Research and Development Projects (SCOLAR-R&D). Her work informs UNESCO, World Bank and OECD policy documents. A Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities, she received EdUHK's President's Award for Individual Research Excellence (2022), CUHK's Research Excellence Award (2017) and Young Researcher Award (2015).
