RGC Delegation to Shanghai and Hefei
The Hong Kong RGC Fellowship Association (HKRFA) was pleased to have representatives joining the Research Grants Council delegation to Shanghai and Hefei from 11 to 15 May 2026, visiting major national science and technology infrastructures and leading universities in Mainland China. HKRFA representatives included Chairperson Professor Alice Wong, Vice-Chairperson Professor Yu Huang, and ExCom Member Professor Vic Law. The programme covered visits to Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the University of Science and Technology of China, as well as frontier research facilities including the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the National Facility for Protein Science in Shanghai, the Hefei Light Source, the Steady High Magnetic Field Facility, and EAST, China's "artificial sun". Through site visits and exchanges with Mainland experts, the delegation gained valuable insights into the latest developments in national research infrastructure and explored new opportunities for Hong Kong–Mainland collaboration in fundamental research, interdisciplinary science, and talent development. We look forward to continuing its role as a bridge connecting excellent research communities and fostering impactful collaboration.

Professor Vic Kam-tuen Law Named Hong Kong’s Only Cornerstone Investigator of the Year
Our Executive Committee Member, Professor Vic Kam-tuen Law , Chair Professor of HKUST’s Department of Physics, has been named a "New Cornerstone Investigator" by the Tencent-funded New Cornerstone Science Foundation for the year, recognizing his outstanding research contributions. This prestigious honor celebrates leading scholars who have made significant impacts in their fields and Professor Law is the only awardee in Hong Kong region. The Cornerstone Investigator award aims to promote high-quality research and elevate Hong Kong’s standing in the global scientific community. This prestigious award will provide up to RMB 15 million over five years to support Professor Law’s research in quantum physics. Congratulations, Professor Law! Professor Wang Yao Receives Certificate of Merit at Fourth National Award for Excellence in Innovation
Congratulations to our member, Professor Wang Yao, Chair Professor in HKU’s Department of Physics, on receiving a Certificate of Merit at the Fourth National Award for Excellence in Innovation, recognising his pioneering contributions to valley optoelectronics in two-dimensional semiconductors. This national honour underscores his long-standing impact in condensed matter physics and quantum materials, and highlights Hong Kong’s leading position in frontier fundamental research.
